Increase Sales Using Twitter by Igniting Engagement
Posted on 21 October 2009 by jasonverdelli
Hello everyone and thank you for stopping back. I can’t count how many times I get asked the questions, What is Twitter exactly? Isn’t Twitter all about telling people what you are doing like eating, driving, etc.? How do I start using Twitter as a tool to help grow my business? These are very good questions and I found it important to share my thoughts with you so you can become much more successful. As you may already know the purpose of Twitter is to share what you are doing, feeling and thinking in 140 characters or less. This is somewhat of a common definition stated out there on the blogosphere. I don’t like that definition and/or fundamental conscious mindset going into using Twitter. Some people, and you may be able to relate, that use Twitter are there simply to share or promote what they have going on. They are sharing links in hope that you will visit them to buy their product or service. As in anything, this is just a portion of the users on Twitter. In one example, I found a company that had no more than one post that just had a coupon offering, yet no followers. This make no sense at all.
So, let’s move into what does make a little more sense when it comes to using Twitter produce the results you want. The most basic fundamental of anything with sales is engagement and conversation. Think of a reverse sales situation that you have been in where you couldn’t go without the product or service. It most likely wasn’t the sales person themselves that made you feel that way. Most likely it was level of engagement and conversation that was involved in the process. Think of buying a car as an example. Some of the reason that you bought the car may have been:
- It performed well during the test drive
- The sales person asked YOU questions and invited your feedback
- You received suggestions and approvals from friends and family to buy the car
These are just a few examples of why you may have bought the car. Think of Twitter as the dealership. It has the necessary location and tools where buyer and seller can be connected, however it is very important that engagement and conversation is stressed within its doors. To break this down into the actual use of Twitter you will want to consider some of the following methods that just pertain to what you are posting:
- Start doing updates about other people that you find interesting and that other may benefit from knowing about
- Ask plenty of questions. Start using your “followers” as a source of feedback. If they feel as if there opinion is valued they will more than likely start paying closer attention to your posts.
- Invite your “followers” to test out or try your product or service for free so you can receive feedback
By implementing these methods you will find that you will start generating an increase level of interest and activity from these people. Remember, it is not about “how many followers you have”. It is about the quality of followers you have and how they relate to what you are sharing on Twitter – for example, if you are in real estate you may want to focus on following those individual that are looking to buy a home and then sending them valuable home buying tips and other information that you can provide for free on your blog or website. Maybe create a separate Twitter account where you just follow other professionals in your industry to ask for feedback and or referrals, etc.
So to wrap up, if you want to start increasing sales using twitter, find ways in your posts to engage and attract feedback from followers. Again, start following those who you would find your posts more interesting and be more likely to engage further. Remember, by following others they will generally reciprocate and follow you so now you have an open floor to start developing better conversations and more opportunities for engagement. Every so often be sure to throw in a link to your blog or website and now you can bet on the fact that these people will visit it and participate in some way.
